Wat Chom Phet was built 18th century stands on a hillside on the west bank of the Mekong river, nearly opposite Wat Xieng Thong. From the river it is a prominent local landmark, visible from several kilometers away both upstream and downstream. The sim is currently in a somewhat dilapidated state with most of the exterior decoration worn away; some carved woodwork remains over the main entrance (under the portico) and on the pelmets in between the portico’s columns. The interior is in better shape with the ceiling decorated with gold-leaf stenciling depicting mice, bees, peacocks, birds, rabbits and other animals. The wat may be approached on land via a dirt road running past Wat Xiang Men. It is also possible to take a boat from central Luang Prabang to an informal dock along the riverbank where one can ascend many dozens of steps to reach the site.
